    FOXHALL FARM
LETS BE HONEST, IT'S NOT REALLY A FARM SO MUCH AS A BIRDY B&B.
WE KEEP MAINLY SILKIES WHICH WE BREED ON A SMALL SCALE, SOME KHAKI CAMPBELLS WHICH WE HATCHED OUR SELVES AND WHO HAVE PROVED THEMSELVES TO BE REALLY EXCELLANT LAYERS, AND A MIXED FLOCK OF LAYERS INCLUDING SOME HYBRID HI-LINES, 1 LIGHT SUSSEX AND VARIOUS OTHER WAIFS AND STRAYS.
VERY SOON I HOPE TO BE THE PROUD OWNER OF A TRIO OF WHITE CALL DUCKS WHICH I'VE BEEN KEEN TO TRY KEEPING FOR SOME TIME NOW.
IN THE BROODERS AT THE MOMENT WE HAVE SOME SILVER SPANGLED AND GOLD SPANGLED HAMBURGS, A LITTLE MIXED BAG 0F 13 INCLUDING A BEAUTIFUL LAVENDER ARACAUNA, A GOLD BRAHMA, A WHITE SILKIE, 2 PEKINS, 2 ANCONAS AND 4 LITTLE MYSTERIES. WHEN I COULDN'T IDENTIFY THESE 4 (the eggs they hatched out of had been marked belg bant but when they hatched out I just wasn't convinced), I SENT AN E-MAIL TO THE BREEDER I HAD ORDERED THEM FROM, WHO TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE IN FACT BELG BANT X ARACAUNA AND IF PULLETS, SHOULD LAY A GREEN EGG. AND IF NOT, WHAT THEN EH ?
WELL I WASN'T TOO IMPRESSED WITH THIS NEWS AT FIRST AS I DON'T REALLY LIKE TO BREED CROSS-BRED BIRDS, BUT IT'S DONE NOW AND HOPEFULLY MOST OF THEM WILL BE LITTLE LADIES WITH ANY LUCK! (fingers crossed)
ALONG WITH THE BIRDS WE ARE ALSO GUARDIANS TO 4 DOGS, DANNY THE SPRINGER, CASSIE (short for Casio,... caz she's a WATCH-dog ... geddit?),AND RAZOR AND FIZZY THE TERRIBLE TERRIERS. THEN OUR OTHER NON-RENT PAYING GUESTS ARE MOTHER AND DAUGHTER PAIR ROADIE AND JODY AND THEIR PLATONIC CHUM J.J. THE CATS, BISCUITS THE HAMPSTER, AND THREE GOATS WHO STARTED OUT AS ONE BUT MYSTERIOUSLY BECAME THREE OVER NIGHT. NAMELY GRACE THE MAMMY AND HER TWO SURPRISES (for us anyway), BUTCH AND HIS SISTER SUNDANCE.
WE'VE HAD THE GOATS FOR CLOSE ON 7 YEARS NOW AND FOR THE MOST PART THEY ARE PRETTY WELL BEHAVED. OF COURSE THERE HAVE BEEN THE OCCASIONAL BIDS FOR FREEDOM AND ADVENTURE AND WHEN BUTCH IS ON A NAUGHTY STREAK HE REALLY TESTS MY PATIENCE. WE HAVE THOUGHT OF REHOMING HIM ON A FEW OCCASIONS BUT THE LAST TIME IT REALLY LOOKED LIKE HAPPENING I GOT A BIT EMOTIONAL AND BACKED OUT, SO THEIR FAMILY IS STILL TOGETHER.
HE SEEMS TO KNOW HOW TO TUG ON MY HEART STRINGS AT THE BACK OF IT ALL AND WHEN HE WAS A NEWBORN KID, HE WAS MUCH SMALLER THAN HIS SISTER AND HAD PROBLEMS FEEDING FROM HIS MOTHER SO I HAD TO BOTTLE FEED HIM. NATURALLY I GOT ATTACHED TO HIM AND HE'S STILL USING THIS TO HIS ADVANTAGE!
OUR HOME IS SITUATED IN THE QUIET COUNTRYSIDE OF THE LIMERICK / CORK BORDER, IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE BEAUTIFUL GALTEE MOUNTAINS. WHERE WE LIVE IS 2 1/2 MILES FROM THE NEAREST VILLAGE AND 7 MILES FROM THE NEAREST TOWN. SO WE ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO AMENITIES BUT WITHOUT THE NOISE OR THE TRAFFIC. WE ARE SURROUNDED ON ALL SIDES BY A MAINLY DAIRY FARMING COMMUNITY. ALL OF OUR NEIGHBOURS ARE HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING AND HAVE A HEALTHY RESPECT FOR THEIR S AND ALL ANIMALS. SOME OF THEM ALSO KEEP FOWL SO ARE NOT TOO BOTHERED BY OUR BOY'S ALTERNATIVE DAWN CHORUS.
