This is the Garden Clutch. From left to right ...Solo, she is a Jersey Giant....Lucky she is a Delaware....Pepper she is also a Delaware, then we have Feisty she is a Blue Favaucana.......Then Tyrian she is a Blue Favaucana as well. This group came together in a tragic but way but they are so much a part of my heart now. I ordered 3 chicks, The 2 blues and 2 Jerseys. I got the call from the post office and went to pick them up. Unfortunately I did not know at the time how much my little Chihuahua hated chickens. On the way home I had him and the box of chicks in the front seat, which would have been fine, but I was in a car accident, the front of my car was hit on the drivers side and the chicks and the dog went flying into the floor board of the car. I was rattled, had a few bruises on my knees but otherwise I was fine. I picked up the box, put it back on the seat and then stepped out to speak to the Police. While I was outside of the car, Mr Bones (the dog) got into the box and killed one of my Jersey Giants. I was heart sick. However when I got home and opened the box I saw Pepper in the box. She was clearly older than the other three by about a week. I was and am still at a loss as to how to explain that. So I had four chicks. 3 days later I was in a local feed store and saw Lucky. I purchased her because she jumped into my hand and gave me the side ways glance that the chicks will sometimes do ..... so adorable. This picture was taken when they were 4 weeks, the day before I out them in the coop
When they were four weeks old I moved them out to the Coop. This is where the Garden Clutch lives at night. I open it in the morning to let them have free run of the Garden. So far they do not stray too far from the coop. Mr. Bones.... The deadly Chihuahua is not allowed in the Garden when they are out. So the Garden Clutch is protected from the mean Chihuahua....Mr. Bones. As you can see they are very anxious to get out in the mornings.
This is Feisty ... She is a Blue Favaucana. Her personality is wonderful and she holds true to her name. She is very active and also very curious. She loves to eat ANYTHING green and is currently my only real flyer. She flits around about two feet off of the ground and as she soars above the other chicks it causes them to try and catch her. She is 10 weeks old and so pretty!
This is Feisty meeting Sasha, my sister's Border Collie/ Australian Sheppard. She takes care of the chicks, Very protective.
Her beard is getting bigger and bigger. She loves to be petted.
Solo is my beautiful Jersey Giant. She is growing so fast and is the Mama of the group. I love this picture because it screams ...."What a wonderful fresh morning!" She is so friendly.
Solo is quite a bit bigger than the others so she is dominant, but in a nice way.
Lucky...... She is sweet, calm and never aggressive.
Pepper is the friendliest of the Garden Clutch and very sweet too. She loves Meal worms and will fly up at the bag to get to them when she sees it. She lets you pick her up and she also likes to be petted.
Tyrian is the 2nd Blue Favaucana. She is very quiet, she follows the others around and does not assert herself in any way. She is the smallest of the Garden Clutch and seems to like that just fine.
As of today they are 12 weeks old and they are thriving. They love the Garden and love eating anything green. They are very different from the other chickens in the "Big Coop" and they have a very special place in my heart. I love the fact that they all seem to be such a tight family group and they are friendly enough to allow the baby to touch them with no pecking. The baby is not sure what to think yet but she does ohh and awe when she sees them. I plan to put a very small heat lamp in the upper coop for them this winter, even though they probably do not need it, I will have better piece of mind at night if I give them a heat source. I can't wait until they start laying. They will give me Olive and Brown eggs and I just adore them.
