The Chicken Temple as my kids call it, is 12 feet by 6 feet. Ok not really huge but that's the way it seemed when the babies were put in. We converted a side of our barn that was a lean-to used for wood. Since it already had the roof and 3 walls, it was easy to add the floor, front wall and pen. All the kids helped build and our Boxer dog Pete supervised. The coop has 6 nesting boxes and I covered the floor with linoleum for easier cleaning. We have since put in several perches and some low ones for the silkie. However, the silkie doesn't know he's not supposed to fly and perches on the highest perch with the rest of the birds. There is a window for ventilation as well as two upper ventilation windows in the rafters.
The outside pen is pretty critter tight. We have lots of racoons that have done nasty things to neighbors chickens thru chicken wire so we decided to use hardware cloth. The pen is L-shaped and goes around the side of the coop too. The wire is buried underground for safety.
Our chicks arrived on July 14th from My Pet Chicken (which I guess uses Ideal Hatchery) because that's what the box said. We ordered 8 hens, no roosters. That's why we chose MPC, they let you order as few as 3 chicks and whatever sex you want and don't throw in extras. All arrived in good shape. We did lose one Silkie who was very tiny and seemed ok for the first week but then just died for some reason.
So hope you enjoy the pictures. I need to take some of the completed coop.
I can't figure out how to paste the pictures in here but here's the link.
