Additional InformationThe determination of whether livestock requires a permit is done through the Zoning Officer. If you need a special permit you would need to appeal to the Zoning Board of appeals. The keeping, raising, and breeding of farm animals such as poultry, horses, livestock or other farm animals, or insects for use only by residents on the premises of one (1) acre or more is permitted. If you have less than 1 (one) acre of land this would require a special permit from the zoning Board. If they\'re for personal use and you have an acre, you are permitted to keep them however construction of structures or pens (chicken coops) may not be constructed or installed without a permit. Ipswich thus far, has continued to require permits for these regardless of how small they are. Accessory structures, other than garages, can be set on grade with no foundation up to 400 sq. ft. in size.
