For Easter I had told my two boys that I will take them to see little chicks. Lucky me the store had some available and we came back home with two little chicks and a coop project to follow....

Welsummer & Cream Brabanter chicks

After searching online for a prefab coop, I could not find anything that will match with our backyard, strong enough to last and at a decent price.
The construction project was on, and instead of going to Disneyland for spring break, the kids and I decided to build THE coop.
BackYard Chicken was a good resource of inspiration, and my drawing took place, well influenced by "Average Gringo's Chicken Coop".
My goal was to build a self sustainable coop that would allow us to go on weekend or vacation with a minimum maintenance.

Coop Location before

Starting construction

Framing base

Galvanized Hardware to prevent from Rodents

Gravel fondation to improve drainage and facilitate leveling

Door and coop subfloor are mounted

Nest box framing

Nest box mounted to the coop

Vinyl floor is used for easy cleaning, and a removable ladder/roost

Our old red wood fence is use for siding and give a beautiful old barn look

1/2" Galvanized hardware is use for the covered run

Plywood roof sheet is mounted

Roof liner to prevent moisture
1000

My 10 years old son installing shingles

Building the ramp with old fence wood.

No door to the coop is need as we live in California. This will leave the hens freedom to go in and out at any time

Inside the coop the gown up chicks are exploring their new home

Our run is ready to be attached to the coop

Outside chicken run in installed

Back door access to the coop for easy cleaning directly into the compost

Compost box for chicken manure

Water supply is a two gallon cooler mounted outside for easy access
This supplies about two weeks of water for our three hens

Water tube goes down to the water bottle

Connection to the water bottle
My initial system was connected to a pvc pipe glued, but I could not get rid of the glue smell
For a cleaner system, I have used a water bottle and connected the tube with non toxic aquarium grade silicone

Two nipple waterer are mounted to the bottle

I made the feeder with an 8" to 6" heating duct pipe
I used an 8" cap upside down for the feeder. The edge is protected by a piece of plastic tube
No food is wasted and this is two to three weeks supply for our three hens

Proud of our beautiful chicken coop
