Good article on some interesting breeds. I had heard of some of these chicken breeds, and others I had not. I appreciated the article because it was on a topic that you don’t see all the time. I like that, in a time of fast growing production meat birds, someone thought to mention some great breeds that need our help.

This is a good "short list" of some of the more rare chicken breeds. I keep Nankin bantams, and can testify to the satisfaction that comes from helping to save a rare creature from extinction. If you want to make a difference, help save a breed. It's worth the effort - and adds a neat story to your own back yard!

There are a couple of things I particularly liked about this article.
The author draws a distinction between hatchery stock and their shortcomings and goes at least part of the way to point out that good breeding stock may require considerable effort to locate.
There are many more breeds that don't even feature in the official breed catalogs that make excellent choices, particularly for those who are looking for chickens more as pets than egg or meat producers.
Many of these lesser known breeds have had minimal human interference and live longer and healthier lives for it.

Not really important, per se, but the cover photo of this article is a picture of some of the most common chicken breeds... and the article is about rare breeds. LOL

This article brings to light breeds I have never heard of that are threatened. As someone that absolutely hates to see anything go extinct, I was very interested! I will definitely consider getting some Javas in the future (when our flock thins out). I love the links to the "clubs" associated with most of the breeds. The photos were helpful too.
