Hi Chicken Friends...

Well, we are first time chicken owners...we got 3 little girls, a Silver Laced Wyandotte (Kiara), a Delaware (Tiannah), and a Rhode Island Red (Trinity)...yes, my husband named them after his goddaughters. LOL.

We've been wanting chickens for so long but the coop, or should I say castle, I wanted to build was going to cost us a fortune...so it kept getting postponed. Until one day...we came a cross a pre-made coop already assembled at COSTCO of all places. It was the only one, kind of a fluke, the guy didn't even know where it came from. It was slightly damaged, so we got it for $100!!!! YUUP!!

By no means was it a quality coop or predator proof...but thanks to my handy hubby and I, it is now :)

Here are several pictures:

1) a picture of the tag of hanging on the coop...what it looked like "before"
2) my paint job
3) added sliding door
4) added higher perch (the ones that it came will will disappear once we add chips and straw
5) added ventilation...yuup, it had NONE
6) added weather stripping around the nesting box...there was a 1/4+ inch gap
7) added chicken wire under the nesting box...the lil coons could've just lifted the flimsy wood and helped themselves to breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Um, I think that's it. Oh yeah...we also added a 2x10 base to lift the coop off the ground a bit. Hubby dug down a few inches, buried chicken wire, and leveled a brick outline for the base to sit on. This will give me depth for a deep litter based coop.

Moving day is today!! They are still in the brooder (dog crate in the garage), but I think we're going to move them into the coop today, but leave the coop in the garage for 2-3 more weeks. They are 6, 5, and 4 weeks old and here in Sacramento it's 90+ degrees during the day and 50-60 degrees at night. Thoughts on that??? Can they go outside yet??

This website and all of your questions, responses, pictures, etc. have help us soo soo soo much be first time chickie parents.

Thank you!
Julie & Duane
