So as I browsed through the other coops on byc there were a lot of ideas that i liked. One problem I don't have much money at all. So keep in mind when looking at my build that it cost me $50. I built a 12 by 8 run with a raised attached coop. We got 6 RSL for Easter and i thought that was a fine size for them. Well to start it off i got 17 free 2x4's from a friend of mine and was able to basically frame out the coop and the walls for the run. We just moved into the house where we live and in one of the sheds was a whole bunch of pines boards with tongue and grove. Well to put those to good use i built the walls of the coop. I had two small pieces of plywood from a project a couple years ago to put doors on each end so i could get eggs and clean out the coop. Also left behind at this new house were a whole bunch of milk crates which i will be putting to use as nesting boxes. We bought chicken wire to put underneath it and around it. That was about $40 and the bulk of my expense. I know a lot of people have said that chicken wire doesn't really stop predators but they will be locked up every night and someone is always home or the dogs are outside to protect them during the day. And then i was on my way to the store to buy a sheet of plywood when i drove past a house with 5 more 2x4's and 7 sheets of this wood stuff that was 8x2 and said free. So i piled it into the car. I put on three sheets stapled a layer of plastic down and then put on three more sheets. It's not the best roof but it will work for now but it will get shingles because my friend is a roofer and has some spare shingles he will give me. The other thing i bought was some bird net for the top of the run. Again i know it's kinda cheap and something could rip through it but i think it is enough to slow something down until the dogs alert us of something bad.. I left the ends of the roof open for air flow so it has 2 gaps about 2 inches tall and 3.5 feet long. Also our nights are still in the 30's so it doesn't have windows but will be getting them as soon as it gets a little warmer and the chicks get a little older. As you can see from the pictures the first night i had a beat up old tarp for a roof. And my coop is cut into two parts by the drop door ladder one side for sleeping the other side will have the nest boxes. My wife likes the door becuase you can put it up and down with out going inside. I think it will be enough ventalation but if people think it needs more please say so. Well the comments fly and be nice it only cost me $50.
