We don't live in a farm! More like a neighborhood close to downtown with neighbors. We had to make something that wasn't too big, cheap, and followed our city ordinance. We went with a medium sized coop that could fit about 6 chickens. We spent hardly any money at all. We recycled some wood from our old fence we took down and used that to make our coop.
We started with making the walls.
Next, we cut our door and put two large pieces of wood across the top and bottom of the door to make it secure. Then we moved it into place.
(We had painted one side of the fence already.)
We then cut a square in the side of the coop for a window and made a ramp for the chicks to go in and out easier.
While we were doing this, chicks were being born!
Next, we put a large wall of wood over the top for the base of the roof. We then added 2 sheets of "galvanized steel roof panel" over it, and then secured it.
We added chicken wire to the inside of the window and put a frame around to secure it. We painted it spray painted it black to make it look nicer. (we cleaned up the edges)
We also cut a door for the hole in the front of the coop. We added a frame and put hinges on it. We attached the door and put a simple lock.
Next was the run. We reused a gate from our old fencing also and attached the two ends to either side of the coop. We dug two holes at the front of each fence and put poles in it. After, we sealed up the hole. We also attached beams of wood to close it up.
We added the gate next. We also put chicken wire in between the pole and the wood so the chickens couldn't escape.
Our malamute mix puppy and Great Pyrenees checked the coop out and approved of it!
We were then finished with the run.
This is what it looked like so far.
To make it look more appealing, we painted it and painted the frame black! Then we were done!
Here is the finished coop! After, we added a roost and nesting boxes. (it looks small in the pictures, but it can fit 6 chickens

What I would do differently is make the run bigger. However we let our chickens free range all over our yard every day. We spent no money on this except for the hinges and the roof. We reused everything else from past projects!
