My little flocks antics keep me entertained daily, and keep me working to get the back from across the road or up a tree. And their crowing keep carol service wakes me up each morning.

Wellie is the queen of my land. If there is food to be had, she gets first pick. Even the roosters tremble before her. She is a medium sized hen who is very friendly, but is a fighter. She acts almost like a shamo or malay because she never backs down In a fight. When a rooster is absent she does start cocking. This means she mounts the other hens and starts acting like a rooster. Her best friends are Miffy and Buffy. They all tend to stick together when they get let out. Dottie tends to stick with Miffy and she sticks with her own two babies Apple and Pear. Apple and Pear are sisters that are inseparable. They stick together like glue and where one goes the other goes. The rooster of their little flock is Tintin. He is a Frizzled welsummer/Frizzle cross. He is quite big and cave be over amorous. He is also very funny to watch rush about the orchard in his wobbling fashion.

Sparta is the lead rooster of my second flock. He is caring and great at finding food and looking out for predators. He is boss of all the flocks apart from wellie. He can be a bit aggressive if you upset his hens and is a bit wild. His favourite hen is honey. She is very friendly and boss hen of her group. She is a great flyer and good at finding food. Her sister Goldy always sticks with her and loves to dust bathe and catch bugs. She has just laid her first egg recently . She is quite flighty and shy. Whinnie is bottom of that flock. She is shy and very distractible. She will often be eating some tasty morsel and the flock will move away. When she looks up and realises she is separated she doesn't call like a normal hen. She simply finds another flock and follows them. She is getting braver and tamer each day.

Phelix is boss of my third flock. He is a small bird with a long tail. He is second in command after Sparta out of all my birds but not over wellie. He has a a lot of courage and loves his hens. If he gets separated he will call and call until they are back. He is a great flyer which comes in handy when Sparta chases him about and he has to take refuge in a tree. Pebbles is his favourite hen and she sticks by him no matter what. If u seep rat her from him she screams so loud I wouldn't be surprised if people in the next county could hear her. She is a brilliant flyer, and can fly onto the roof of my house with ease. She is only recently learning to fly into trees to get away from other birds as she is bottom of all my chickens. I use to have a silkie cross rooster but he attacked her and ripped all the skin of the back of her neck so we ate him. She is just finishing healing over, she is friendly and I often trip up over her. Amber is a little bit more wild and whenever trouble occurs she takes to the trees. She loves bug hunting and dashes about after them. Their is a pair of Silver laced Wyandottes with the Phoenix who will soon be moving in with Spartas flock. The rooster is Jack Frost. He is also a very tame rooster. He sticks close to his girlfriend. He doesn't run about he gallops. Which is very funny to watch. He is a typical teenager and constantly try's his luck with the hens. He once got too cocky with wellie and paid the price. Beat him onto the floor before he got up and galloped off. SnowFlake is his girl friend and she loves to run about. She is less tame than him but is still lovely to be around.

I hatched all my birds bar Wellie, Buffy, Miffy, Dottie and the three Phenix.

I used to have a gold laced Wyandotte bantam who mated with her constantly and she was his favourite hen, but he got taken by the fox late spring leaving Dottie with his two daughters, I think wellie is still loyal to him. The frizzle an Sparta were raised together so they know Sparta is boss and Sparta leaves the frizzles flock alone because wellie is in it and he gets attacked if he gets too near. And the silver laced were put in with the Phoenix when they were just off heat so the get along, the frizzle and the Phoenix have had a couple of fights but now the frizzle knows phelix is boss. And the silver laced got chased by Sparta and the frizzle when he was young so he has never challenged them and phelix got attacked by Sparta once and now takes to the trees every time Sparta comes near. And everyone now knows not to mess with wellie since she attacked everyone at least once. Wellie even attacked me once for taking her bread.
  17. Amb3r
so Wellie never gets mated too?? I find her character unique!! Mostly the roosters would fight the matriarch and take over the flock, it's strange she has been ruling the roost with 2 or more roos in the flock!! Awesome!! Lovely collection!
  18. Nickeyo
Thankyou all, the frizzle is a wild card, he can either be really nice and gentle or he can suddenly go wild and aggressive. My Phoenix are one of my favourites, such characters, amber just scuttles around on her small legs then just rushes off after a bug, she looks mad because the bugs are so small
  19. bantambury
    I LOVE your phoenix!
  20. pickitfarm
That frizzle is a handsome boy. People think I am crazy when I describe our chickens as having separate personalities but they really do. Love your descriptions.
  21. texgardengal

  28. albchickenfarm
You have a beautiful flock! I LOVE your frizzle... so cute! :)
  29. Nickeyo
Thank yon all for your lovely comments, wellie does take her role seriously. As she walks up the garden the other chickens have to stay behind her, and any from other flocks ahead of her stop, watch her and when she looks at them they hurry off to find somewhere else to eat. It's quite funny. When I got her she was very flighty and if she saw a rooster she would turn and run, now it's the roosters that are running. she also throws other roosters of her flock of hens and chases them well away. My Phoenix are probably one of the funniest to watch, if one hen wanders and gets separated all three will scream and scream until they find each other of wellie comes charging in and they have to fly into the trees to get away. If I knew how to add videos from an IPad I would upload one of wellie strutting through, eating then launching herself at Sparta when he gets to close.

  32. chickenpooplady
Beautiful flock! Congrats on Picture of the Week!
  33. Wyandottes7
    Beautiful birds!
  34. donnavee
I enjoyed your description of Wellie. We got 2 Welsummers this year and they immediately jumped to head of the pecking order once they started laying. Our young Roo is no match for them and runs in the other direction when he sees them headed his way. I've even seen them knock him off another hen in the middle of attempted mating. Kind of funny, but not to him.
  35. roostersandhens
Lovely chickens! Congrats on pic of the week! :)
  36. cknnewbie
What a nice looking and varied flock you have! I love Wellie's job description - Job: Queen. It's good to be queen! The Phoenix are gorgeous.

  40. BantamFan4Life
You have gorgeous birds! I really enjoyed seeing them! Thanks for sharing :)
  41. Nickeyo
My pleasure, for their size the eggs are actually quite large. They don't lay often compared to say a RIR but you could get 100-120 eggs in a good year. They are good broodies though and very friendly. Their eggs are white/cream and very tasty. They have good fertility. My only problem with them would be the fact that if they were free ranging and got shut out of the coop, they wouldn't hesitate in flying into a tree. They are amazing fliers. Probably better than a pheasant or guinea fowl. My hens can fly straight up into the air no problem. The males tails do grow quickly so I wouldn't keep them in with a larger breed at all. But they are a pleasure to own. And very flock orientated. I would definitely recommend these birds if you have room.
  42. One Chick Two
Your chickens are gorgeous! I didn't realize that the female Phoenix hens had such long, beautiful tails! How big are her eggs (if you were to compare them to say, a standard sized breed?) Are they sized like Banty eggs, and white? Thank you so much for sharing!
  43. Nickeyo
Thank you. They are quite rare, I hope to hatch some more golds next year
  44. chickenneighbor
Don't see much about Fresians. Very handsome birds. Nice photos.
