My Gems

Hello, everyone! I've wanted to make a "My Coop" page for a long time, but also wanted to wait 'til my birds were older. Well, they're older now! They're laying eggs...at least, I think only five of the six are, but oh well. :)

We'll start with the run. It's an old dog kennel my dad put together YEARS ago for our first chicken flock (this new flock is my first one!, and I do hope to move them to a different part of the yard with grass and dirt as their footing eventually). We did put the chicken wire on the outside of the chain link back in March or April, I believe, so the chicks couldn't escape when they were small. The run is approximately 6 ft. high, 6-and-a-half-ft wide, and 12-ft long. The picture isn't the greatest, I know...and that plant in a planter in the front makes it a bit harder to see all of it.

Then here's their dog house--they don't have an official chicken house yet, but I do hope we could make/get them one eventually. And there's a tennis ball in there to help them know they need to lay in there.

Now we're at the birds!
First off is Superchick, the Black Sex Link. I love her; she doesn't mind when I pet her, and she has some gorgeous iridescent green in her black feathers in the sunlight. :love

Next is Emma, the Production Red. She's super submissive, so I love stroking her since she'll squat down in place for quite a while and let me. She's hilarious when I pick her up, because every time I put her back down, she gets all fluffy and looks like a frizzled chicken for a few seconds!

The third one is Isabelle, the Barred Rock. She's so super friendly to everyone...except for some of her flock mates; that's the downside about this social girl. I love her docility, though. She was also the first one to jump onto the edge of the brooder, and to try out a wooden perch when they were young, I believe.

The fourth one is Daisy, the Amberlink. She's also SUPER social and friendly like Izzy; she's a big girl, but very athletic and loves jumping up into the air! :ya When she was a young pullet and chick, for the longest time I just had NO idea what breed she was. When she started getting this light brown on her, I thought it was dirt. So I gave her a bath, but my mom was like, "I think it's just her coloring." The 'dirt' didn't wash off.... My mom was right! So I confirmed it on here to see if she was an Amberlink, and everybody voted 'yes.' :D

The fifth one is Hope, my EE. She's the one I think isn't laying, and she's a little skittish, but at the same time, pretty sweet and calm...well, calm as in when I hold her, she almost never puts up a fuss, so even though the other ones are super tamed, too, now, she's still my first pick to hold and carry around. <3 ;) I believe she has a slipped Achilles tendon, though, as she hops when she moves...but she CAN run fast!...and her leg sticks out somewhere around the hock, I think.

And last, but certainly not least!, is Lacey the Silver Laced Wyandotte. For a long time, I didn't like her at ALL. But now? She's SO tame and friendly and lets me pet her, hand feed her, get close to her... you name it! (Because she used to be the EXACT opposite so-many weeks ago). So I went from despising her flighty, crazy, extremely skittish personality, to loving her a lot! She's quite docile now. :love

I love all of my chickens, and am so glad God gave them to me! :thumbsup

Well, that's the end of this article. If I ever get more chickens and a new coop built, then I'd hope to update this one, or make a new one entirely! :D

God bless you all, and thanks for reading! :frow
