It has finally happened! We have our first egg!
The kids noticed our Rhode Island Red go off from the flock to visit the nest boxes.
And in a little while....Success!
A perfect egg.

It was just a little smaller than a store bought egg. Not bad for a first attempt.

I seem to be the flock's rooster. They follow me around the yard and the RIR has been squatting for me all week.
I am very proud of my girl!

After a couple of months of using the coop we made a couple of adjustments.
Moved the water and feed to the front.
We also put sand down in the run.

Added a gate latch to the egg door

Added a lower roost to give them more room and allow easier access to the higher branch.

We think the bleaching oil is going to be a great choice. It should be low maintenance and look rustic when it grays out.
