Describe 'Penny the Henny! ' here

“Penny the Henny” is our old production/rhode island red hen who is Seven now, and going on Eight. We got her as a day-old chick from the feed store, along with her sister Scarlet, and two brothers Red, and Whitey.

They lived a very wonderful life, at a farm, a few minutes away from us where we housed our Sheep and Goats, in a small coop with a large run. They were some of our first chickens and we adored them! When they turned 6 months, Scarlet and Penny gave us two large brown eggs a day! We were thrilled.
Red, and Whitey were excellent protectors of our sweet little egg laying machines.
They were also never mean to us or each other, and were very sweet to Scarlet and Penny.

We eventually got a few more hens to add to Red, and Whitey’s harem. And they too started laying eggs.

We had our little flock for about two years, and were so very, very happy with them. I loved my “little girlies” and could “carry on conversations” with them! :D

The most important job of Red and Whitey was to protect their ladies from our sheep and goats. They loved to raid the coop and eat their grain! Red and Whitey would bravely flog the sheep and goats, while the hens screamed their heads off! It was a sound to behold! We would run to the coop afraid to find a predator attacking but, it was only our herd. We would shoo them away and the noise would stop.

I think my favorite memory was gathering their eggs. Sometimes one of the girlies would be laying and would shriek and growl at me from in their nest box.

Now at 7 years old, she the head of my flock. Even at her old age.
