One the 17th the quail eggs in the incubator began hatching, 7 babies born on the 17th. Got up on the 18th and had 3 babies in the incubator with several pips showing. I'm also sad to say that 2 of the babies died the same day. The total surviving babies is 16. I had 28 eggs in the incubator, I think that is a respectable hatch rate for the first time! I'm sad to say we had to go out of town early on the 18th due to the death of my step father, J.T. Frame, I am giving him honor here because one of the things we had in common was our love of poultry. J.T. had over 200 quail and around that many chickens when he died. He was always asking me how many eggs i was getting and how the quail business was going, LOL. Seems fitting that 11 baby quail were born on the day of his funeral.

We candled some of the eggs before mama hen had enough, still not sure how many
eggs she's setting on since I know a couple of the hens have continued to lay in her nest,
already decided to put any unhatched eggs in the incubator to see if they just need a little more time in
the oven.

Was out of town for weekend, came back 2/27 to
find the quail had gone set, on 16 eggs! she's not
big enough to cover that many eggs, guess we're going

Sad news: we lost two newborn (2-4-11) bunnies (aka "kits") today. One was found dead in the nest box and the other,,,is lost, gone, not there. Maybe my sweet big brown dog found it on the ground and licked it to hard,,either that or alien abduction.
