| Additional Information | The ordinance includes the following requirements: The number of chickens is limited based on the size of the residential lot. The lot must be at least 6,000 square feet, and on a lot of that size, an owner can keep one or two chickens. For a lot of 7,000 to 8,000 square feet, three chickens are allowed. Four chickens can be kept on lots of 8,000 to 9,000 square feet; five on lots between 9,000 and 10,000 square feet. For lots of 10,000 square feet and above, total chickens are limited to six. Only hens are allowed in residential areas. No roosters. Chickens in residential zones must be kept in a secure enclosed outdoor area and the area must include a covered, ventilated and predator-resistant coop. Chickens are not permitted to roam out- side the enclosed area. If chickens have access to an enclosed run in addition to a coop, the coop must have at least 2 square feet per chicken. If chickens stay in the coop at all times, there must be 6 square feet per chicken in the coop. The coop must be in the rear yard of the lot and be 15 feet from any property line and at least 6 feet from any dwelling. The coop generally will not need a building permit unless power or underground water lines are extended to it. Enclosed areas and coops need to be kept clean and sanitary so that there is no detectable odor at any property line. Chicken feed needs to be kept in rodent-proof and predator-proof containers. In addition to the provisions above, the ordinance requires that Provo residents wishing to keep chickens in residential zones register with the City annually.
