My Flock

Hello everyone, and welcome to the small corner of BYC dedicated to my flock! Info and pictures will be added as I can find time, so stay tuned!

The Emus

I keep a small flock of emus here. My oldest, Ciara, is a standard female. She is very sweet, and puts up with me dressing her up. Draco and Lyra are younger, hatched the year after Ciara. They are blondes. Draco is male, and Lyra is female. They too are very tame and friendly. I adore my emus.

The Geese

I also keep a small flock of Tufted Roman geese. Tufted Romans are small, friendly geese that, as the name implies, have been around since Roman times. Sadly, the breed is now critically endangered. My flock started with one goose, Lacie, and over time I have added more, hatched and kept goslings from them, etc.

The Ko Shamos

I keep and raise a couple breeds of chickens, one breed being ko shamos. These guys are my favorite breed (but don't tell the others!). They are a small, ornamental bantam breed originating in Japan. They are a game breed. Though the breed was never actually used for fighting, they were bred to have 'the spirit of the fighter' and are feisty, dominant little birds that never back down from a challenge. They are extremely outgoing and friendly with people, easy to handle and fun to work with. People tend to either love or hate how they look. Obviously, I fall into the former camp!

The Brahmas

The other breed of chicken I keep are brahmas. Brahmas are large, friendly birds. They are cold hardy and excellently suited for the climate here in New England. I keep them in several colors, Light Brahmas being the only color I have that is currently accepted in the SOP. They are gorgeous, docile giants, good mothers and decent layers.

The Pigeons

I also keep pigeons. Currently the only breed I keep is the Romanian Naked Neck Tumbler pigeon. As the name sounds, their necks are bare of feathers, just like the naked neck chicken. They also tumble when they fly - that is, they do a somersault in midair.

The Cockatiels

I know these guys aren't poultry, but they're still members of my flock! I have two cockatiels, both taken in from people that no longer wanted them. Cricket is a gray male and is at least five years old, and possibly older. Luna is a female whiteface pearl. She was hatched in early May of 2019.

Other Pets

They might not be birds, but I can't leave out my other animals! I have two cats, B.W and Boo. B.W. is my 20 year old black and white DSH. She was dumped off at a neighbor's horse barn when she was about six months old. She and I quickly formed a bond, and I ended up keeping her. Boo is a six year old black DSH. She was also a stray, who managed to sneak into my workshop one day and ended up locked in there for a night before I found her. Of course, I kept her. Finally, I have a bearded dragon named Caramel. I adopted Caramel in 2012, when she was barely the size of my index finger. She is another of my animals that puts up with me putting her in outfits.
