Ramblin' Rooster's Backyard Farm

  1. Ramblin Rooster
    Hello BYCers!

Ramblin Rooster here! I am located in the beautiful Fairfield, Connecticut where my animals, my family, and I inhabit our 2 acre piece of heaven! We were very fortunate to have a large antique horse barn come with our property, which proved to be useful when we started raising all types of animals!

We currently raise around 40 chickens of 25+ varieties, 2 twin olde English babydoll southdown sheep, 2 White Pekin Ducks, and a Potbelly Pig! In the future we are hoping to get a drake for our Pekin hens, and maybe some Geese as well.

Here are some (a little bit of an understatement of the amount [IMG]) photos of our animals! The ones included do have their names and breeds labeled, but keep in mind this is only some of the many birds that are part of our flock!

Eva, a very fat and friendly Buff Orpington hen!

Stormie, a very beautiful and also very fat Silver Laced Wyandotte hen!

Hashy, a Red Sex Link hen from early in our chicken keeping adventure!

Waffles, a Red Sex Link hen whom was one of our first three chickens, whom we got many years ago.

Clover, an Olde English Babydoll Southdown (or just Babydoll [IMG] ) whether (castrated male) who is extremely friendly and enjoys hogging the camera (and the food!)

Clover and in the background his beautiful sister Bo, who is much more shy and gets very upset when separated from her brother. In fact, she once broke down the door when we were giving Clover some de-worming medicine! The hinges were old, but it was still a very powerful effort to get back to her brother!

Daphne (front right) and Daisy (back left) are our two White Pekin ducks who we acquired at Northeastern Poultry Congress in January 2015. They are very entertaining and enjoy going for a swim and eating grapes... sometimes at the same time!

Ellie II, a Red Sex Link Hen, and another one of our chickens from much earlier in our chicken keeping adventure.

Some of our chickens taking a nap after playing in the snow for a while!

Our girls always come to greet us in the corner when they see us coming, mostly because they are hoping for a treat!

Apologies for the poor quality photo (they won't stop moving!), but here is our main coop which houses most of our chickens (except for a few bantams) and our ducks.

Our free range door in use so the chickens can enjoy a free range! Our free range door is installed in the fencing of their run and serves as a way to get them out to free range without having to go through the barn the opposite way, as we have no gate to their run for safety reasons. Their free range gate is very secure and has worked well since we built and installed it.

Daisy and Daphne going for a swim!

Victoria, a Blue Silkie hen, who is a career broody and enjoys hatching and raising chicks! She is broody about 9 out of 12 months of the year regardless of whether or not she has eggs to hatch or chicks to raise!

Clover and Bo our sheep enjoy resting and watching the chickens through the fence - they do so every day and when the chickens free range the sheep usually follow them around, thinking of them as friends. Whenever a chicken gets upset and makes noise, the sheep get upset and try to help. The sheep are also very careful when around the chickens and have never tried to harm them.

Here is Olivia the Pig, our latest addition! She is still very young, but will only weight about 35 pounds when full grown. She is a handful, and always entertaining!

I try to keep very accurate records of our animals, so below is a roster of them and their names and breeds. I will update this every few months, but here is the most recent date it was updated: 4/3/2015.
