We wanted a coop for our backyard that would fit in with the landscape (in our case, our hens came after our yard had been landscaped for native plants and vegetables gardens) as well as provide a safe place from raccoons and some good protection from the heat of summer and cold of winter. We started with plans from http://greenroofchickencoop.com/ (a good start but measurements were wrong in the instructions - a word of caution for anyone trying these plans) and upgraded the wood and added drainage to the planter box roof.
We currently have 3 hens in the coop and run. That's the maximum without a permit for our urban area.
