Hi, about a year ago we started to consider why buying eggs from a neighbor, if we have enough space at home for having our own hens and eggs. Both, me and my wife were convinced that we act stupid and my wife immediately asked me to create a chicken coop, and that she will arrange purchasing chickens and material required for their quality accommodation.
As a man I said of course: “Sure, no problem. I am more than able to build a wooden house.” Well, already the first night, when I was pondering the plan for chicken coop I discover that it's beyond my abilities. To admit this to my wife? No way. If I’m capable than I’m capable. I plotted a different approach and began to review an internet with the desire to find some good advice, also maybe some pictures and designs. And I have. At BYC!
So we started. I decided to go with a concrete floor that I will be able to easily replace the sand when needed. From the very beginning we had in mind that our chickens will graze outdoors during the day and only sleep in the chicken coop at night.
Then I started to build a wooden structure. Holders for wooden pillars are installed in concrete.
I placed the roof and then the frame of the house, where chickens will sleep at night.
As the chicken coop is a little bit away from our house I incorporated (built) a closet, where I store food and other necessary accessories.
As we predicted that chickens will graze outside, I made a separate entrance for them, where they can freely walk in and out of the chicken coop.
I also take care of the entrance, where I'll be walking in and out.
The interior is also made of wood. I placed styropor between internal and external wooden wall. In Slovenia, winters are cold and I'll need also a heating lamp. In the picture below windows are closed, but normally most of the time are open (except when windy and during heavy showers).
Chicken coop is painted with natural colors (natural resins). In the end, we paint few motives.
They are out almost all day long.
