My wife had a opportunity to rescue 7 hens and a guinea, the only problem was we didn't have a place to house them and there was a dead line when they had to be moved. Well I had some time off and I hadn't built anything in a long time so I decided to build the girls a place to live.
The design is very simple, a 8x8x8 box with a 8x16 fenced run. I used 4x4 treated post for the corners and fence post. Most of the framing was done with 8' 2x4 lumber. All lumber that was inside and would be out of the weather was standard white pine and anything outside or close to ground contact is treated lumber.
The roof is simple corrugated galvanized metal and the coop is skinned with 8' x 6" cedar fence pickets held in place with stainless steel screws. The run is 4" cedar fence pickets with the top covered with poultry wire.
The nesting boxes are built with 3/4" plywood then covered with a thin sheet of aluminum for waterproofing and then covered with cedar.
In the end, I enjoyed the build, the wife is happy and the girls have a new home.
