I live in New England, and have a mixed flock of 9 pullets (2 Buff Orpingtona, 2 Barred Plymouths Rocks, 1 Plymouth Rock, 2 Astralorps and 2 Aracaunas) who have all just started laying in the past two months. We allow them to free range on our acreage on the weekends when they can be supervised for their safety. Obviously they LOVE this time and take the opportunity to forage in every garden we have (both flower and vegetable) as well as at the wood's edge etc.
On this particular autumn day in late October, after several hours of foraging, they seemed to all decide to take a break and settle under one of our apple trees for a group nap, nestled together in the fallen leaves, soaking up the late afternoon sun. When I saw them, I grabbed my camera and laid down in the grass about 6 feet away, trying to get a picture of them all sleeping. Suddenly, one of my sons and dog went running by behind me causing them all to pop their heads up to see what all the racket was about...and "click" I got the picture...I love how it turned out.
