I started out our chickens in baby pools filled with cedar shavings. I taught them to drink out of drip critter waterers which kept things clean. Also, I made little roosting bars for them, moving it up and changing dowel sizes as they got bigger. Then, I had my husband make a chicken run for them, parallel to our house. They had an indoor coop, an outdoor covered room with dirt (now sand), and a grassy area. They quickly tore up the grassy area, and it now has small-size bark chips.
