This is my first time ever owning chickens, and I love it! I've had my girls for about a year, and plan on getting a couple more next year.
They are all just over a year old, and I got them all at the same time at Wilco. I have loved the experience, and they are some of the best pets I have ever owned. Not only are they great company, but also great egg layers and have great, individual personalities.
I have two Speckled Sussex (Calliope and Thalia), two Buff Orpingtons (Honey and Saffron) and one Barred Rock (Ivy). I was originally going to have a theme with the names, but I just couldn't decide on any one theme. Instead, The Sussex are named after two of the greek muses, the Orpingtons are named after food, and the Barred Rock gets to be unique.
This is Saffron:
She has a strange personality, sometimes loving and affectionate, sometimes bossy and occasionally pecks me (but not the other hens). She is one of my most beautiful chickens, with perfect smooth golden feathers and a very large comb and wattles.
Honey is below: Honey is the one drinking:
When she was a chick, Honey would use my legs as a slide, and climb up on my knees, then slide down my legs. She would do it over and over again until I finally got up and moved. She is still very attached to people as an adult. Honey is a little smaller than Saffron, and a darker, richer color.
My buffs tend to stick together, I'm not sure why, but they seem to have their own little club.
This is Ivy:
Ivy is very curious. She was fascinated by the camera, and kept on trying to peck at it. There were some close calls.
Calliope is the hen below:
She is a little more shy than the rest of the hens. Both of my SS are less people friendly than the others, but they aren't mean.
This Thalia:
She is a very adventurous little girl. When the lawnmower broke and the grass grew up several feet in my backyard, Thalia was the first to explore the long grass, after the flock had been hesitating to enter the unknown for several days.
My girls have never really seemed to have a pecking order. Ivy seemed to be in charge when they were chicks, but after moving into the coop, they all kind of equaled out. They all sleep on the same perch at night and I have never had any issues with them pecking or hurting each other. They're a great little family.
