What a ride it's been since October 2014!

I built the chicken coop from recycled and repurposed materials I have mostly be given or have found....with of course a few exceptions. Our first girls (5) were Isa Browns that we got from a farm a relatively local backyard chicken house. I knew next to nothing then.... One little one got sick right away, of course, she came that way and I didn't know enough......I nursed her for two weeks and she recovered and went back to rejoin the others.
The coop the girls.....

Before Christmas, one day out of the blue, one little hen was found in the nesting box.......and then there were four.
This is the coop as of last month....however, after tutoring for a few weeks, the white tarp has been replaced with clear PVC roof sheets! and....there is an extra four feet of chicken wire up around the open air bit to ensure no escape artists.....
Sirius Black on guard duty....

Caitlyn, Rosie, Bif Naked are pictured here....the three amigos go everywhere together... They are all ex-bat Isa Browns, age unknown...but they sure do lay!

, the girls love their side yard...

Henny Penny (aka Zombie) just recently passed away. Here she is in the best photo I have ever been able to get of her. She was the sickly hen from the beginning, was often unable to dust bathe, didn't lay but new me and always came to see me and have a cuddle.

And then there were the 3 RIR "hens" I bought 4 weeks ago today.....except....they turned out to be 2 roosters and one hen......

Today the woman who sold them to me, exchanged the two roos for 2 Caramel Queens. They are only 5/6 weeks old....and they are precious. Pictures to come!

As the Cluck Turns....stay tuned for more chicken pix!

So....fast forward to Fall 2015.....close calls with rats, opossums and a hawk! All with in a week of each other! Yikes! The old coop needed so many upgrades and my poor back was tired of stooping all the time.....so.....I built a new one from repurposed materials and parts of the old coop...

You can see how crazy the old coop was becoming.....now they have a draft free, well ventilated new home with a safe covered run.
