4x6 medium coop. No blueprints or much sketching. Just cut and swing the hammer. Hope you enjoy! The reason for the name of the coop is that my wife and I are big metal heads. We love our 80's hair metal music. Also, the siding is cement board to make it rock solid. All of the chickens were named after lead singers in metal bands.
Drove an hour to get the ones we wanted. 2 silver laced wyandottes, 2 isa browns, 2 white marans, 1 black copper maran, 1 blue maran, 1 americauna, 1 golden laced wyandotte. Had to build this brooder box in a hurry. Was going to use cardboard boxes but the only ones I could get in a pinch was the banana ones. So being under the gun, I slapped this together and made one mistake. My wife asks me if I used the door for the coop that was cut out because it was the size I needed. I sure did. The one on the right side. Had to make another coop door.
They can't wait. It's crunch time!
Typical floor. 4x6. I got all my lumber from a friend that owns a sawmill a couple miles down the road. $1 for a 2x4. Kiln dried and straight as an arrow.
I used 4x4 legs at 18" high.
Constructing the walls. You can see the nest box wall with the windows.
Wasn't heavy. 2 of us moved this out. Nailed the walls after leveled on the big patio pavers so it doesn't sink into ground.
7/16" osb sides. Quality clamps make working by yourself much easier.
Nest boxes.
2 display windows were given to me. That's the only way to go. Don't buy any!
Wall studs on run door side were ran horizontal because I was going to use a board and batten style but a friend had some left over cement siding.
Installing an aluminum custom roof. A friend has a bending brake and he owns an exterior business. This was discontinued color so he couldn't use. What a big help he was.
That is the cement board siding. Aluminum fascia, drip edge, and nest box lid.
Used hardware cloth for screen door. A sash from another display window I dismantled.
Eastern side of coop. It was killing me not to put a window in at first but I'm already this far.
4 nest boxes and 10 chickens. Thinking 1 is definitely a rooster. Took one box and converted it into a hopper feeder. It does free up a lot of floor space for them. Easy to fill and no spill inside. Saves a lot on food.
Far wall is insulated because it is west facing and floor is commercial grade linoleum that was free from a friend.
Plenty of ventilation.
Had the water hanging but kept getting bumped and spilled. Put it on 2 bricks I had laying around. No more problems.
Went with a 10x10 dog kennel because we will be moving in a couple of years so I didn't want to make this permanent. Plus it was easy to put up. Chicken wire 2' high and 2x4 welded wire above.
