The White Faced Black Spanish (WFBS) came from Spain originally, arriving in the U.S. from the Caribbean Islands. The WFBS was once known as "the Fowls of Seville", and is also called Clown Chickens or Clown Faced Chickens. During the colonial period they where very popular in the South. British records that date back to 1572 have been found of this breed. The White Faced Black Spanish is thought to be the oldest breed in the Mediterranean class. It was admitted to the American Poultry Association in 1874. Before commercial egg operations began, many farms had White Faced Black Spanish. They are closely related to the Minorca breeds.
