Wanted to post some pictures of our coop and run set up for the Winter months. It seems there's lots of questions here and and I thought a visual would be helpful for the newbies. We started raising chicks again in March of 2020 after having several years hiatus from the chicken hobby. When we had this coop delivered we made sure it was facing South to capture the passive solar for cold Winter days. On the North side is a piece of 3/4 inch plywood that keeps the wind from blowing underneath the coop. The girls love it there! We have a heated waterer hanging off the ground a few inches and hay to keep their feet away from the snow. Nothing fancy! They can come in and out as they please. No need for heaters just shavings, hay, grain and treats. Blueberries are their fav! At night they roost at sunset and I close all their doors and secure their gate. They always go in on their own. In the a.m. I let them out of the coop an hour or so after sunrise depending on temperature. We keep a thermometer posted to the side wall. It is amazing how warm it can stay in there with the sun shining through the windows it makes them very happy.. When they see the snow they're not always interested in going out.. But at least they have that option.
