:/In this topic I will talk about peafowl eggs for this year like when they were laid, what I plan on doing with them, if they end up good or not, and hopefully this topic will end with a happy ending of at least one egg hatching...
Some quick background:
Of my five peafowl three are peahens, but last year only Ice laid eggs. Her first egg was next to a plant, then her second egg was next to a different plant. She wasn't laying in one spot but eventually after moving the eggs and using fake eggs we had her laying under a little hut with palm fronds covering it. Her first clutch was six eggs, but she never sat on them. Finally we had to collect them all and throw them out because they went bad. Her second clutch was only 3 eggs. She sat on one, then stopped setting all together so we took these eggs and tried incubating them but it turned out that none of them were any good. I am sure we are partly to blame...Maybe we should have given her more time to do something with her eggs. This year we will try a different approach. We have the hut Ice laid in, some brand new nest boxes with fake eggs inside, and two dog boxes stacked for them to nest in. On April 4th I saw Dragon mate with Pip so I have been waiting for the eggs...
Today:
As I walked to the pen today I was thinking about how I should check for an egg since I knew it would be any day now. The first place I looked was in the small tarp covered section with the two dog boxes full of hay stacked on top of each other. I peered in the top blue dog box and saw a bright white egg!!!!!! I ran to go tell mom! I am pretty sure it is Pip's. I searched the rest of the pen just in case.
So this is the start! I didn't have the camera with me so tomorrow I will get some pictures. Peahens won't abandon their nest if they see you looking at their egg and touching it will they? Pip didn't see me but I was wondering...
