We have a hen and I recently noticed she has a dirty butt - yellow diarrhea - and we moved her away from the rest of the chickens and now she seems to have a buldge coming from her butt which is slightly bloody and is attracting flys. She seems to be eating and drinking just fine but we're concerned and don't really know what to do. The buldge almost looks like an egg shape but watching her she is able to squeeze it smaller - not sure if it just looks like an egg or if there is one there and she is squeezing it up when this happens. If any one has any idea what might be going on or if you need more information to help me please let me know
Thank you my little boys really appreciate your help

Can you try soaking her bottom in warm water? This will clean the area so you can see it better as well as help relax her. If she has an egg in there, she may pass it then.

Hopefully someone else will posts soon, but in the mean time, soak her bottom in warm water.

It could be prolapse -
you may have to push it back in
do a search on prolapse
it may happen again - some try honey others use preperation H
are you able to post a picture?

Sopunds as if you may have a prolapsed vent. I have no experience with that. I'd do a thread search for info.

Good Luck!

YOu should soak her bottom, then apply some Preparation H and GENTLY try to push it all back in. SHe won't like it, but you will need to do it. Make sure there is no egg there first. This may take a few tries. Keep her in a dark place so she won't want to make any eggs until she is better. Keep her in a place by herself.

Thanks for the help - I'll try soaking her and look up the prolapse. Thanks again - if anyone thinks of anything else let me know. I appreciate your help.
