I have around ten roosters (maybe more). Some are around 4 months old and some are around 2 and a half months old. I can't keep all of them and I want to keep some for breeding. I will probably keep one of each color ( bl, black, sp, buff and white.) I want to create a checklist so that I can rate them as they grow and change so when it comes time to sell them this summer I can make an intelligent choice. Could I hear some suggestions for what I should include on this checklist. Thanks!

correct toes are always at the top of my list, followed by dark combs. personality is important to me , I don't keep jerks no matter how pretty. If you post some pics on here people will help you choose.

I'd love to see a checklist too! Please help us out, Oh Mighty Poultry Gurus.....

I agree that toes are very important, but so is the comb, and for sure the color of the skin! That includes the comb.
I just can't stand to see pictures of Silkies with red combs or single combs.
If you want to only use the very best then you need to look at the crest and the tail and leg feathering.
They should be very good in all of these.
You don't need to keep very many roos, decide what color/colors you want to raise and then pick the best, and go from there, you can improve you stock by being careful, and remember that the quality of those hens is just as important.
Post pics and i'm sure you'll get some help
Best of luck,
Cheryl

Ok, I am making a checklist and will add to it.

1. Correct toe spacing

2. Dark comb - not red

3. nice personality- no jerks!

4. color of skin - black

5. crest , nice shaped and full

6. leg feathering

7. Bird as a whole - no DQs

8. short back

9. overall balance

10. nice "S" curve that is proportionate

11. round cushion with no hard feathering

12. comb color and shape is more important than size

13. wing placement

14 . short legs for showing but not for breeding

15. color

16. Does it conform to breed standard?

First you rule out anything with obvious dq's. We already did that on those babies of yours. The next will take a lot of patience on your part. Overall balance plays a role! You are looking for the nice S shaped body that is proportionate. Feet are only 5 point out of 100 for judging. I am fussy on it but some judges could care less. I like a nice short back and round cushion with no hard feathering. Comb color and shape is more important than size. A nice shaped and full crest. Too short of wings are better in show ring but make horrible breeders. Wing placement. Lastly once conformation is in place then you look at color. Does it conform to breed standard?

Scuse me. Was trying to type quick before my break at work was over. I meant the leg lenth, not wing length. Too long of legs don't look good in the show ring. Those shorter legged birds sometimes need to be bred via AI though. Amy
