Byron's Chicken Hilton

This is my coop built from a plan purchased on blueprintfinder.com. It's a throw-back design that resembles what chicken coops may have looked like in the 1920's and 30's. Indeed, one of the things that attracted me to it was that it resembled the chicken coop my grandmother had back when I was a kid in the 1950's. The coop measures approximately 12'w x 9'd x8'h with a shed style roof that slopes down to about 7' in back. One mistake I made initially was building it without a floor. After a wet winter it was clear that a modification was needed. I used a 2.5 ton hydraulic jack to raise the coop a corner at a time and place it on cement blocks. Once that was done a floor could be put in. The interior shots were taken as the floor was finished. The framing uses 2x4''s with 2x6's for the roof and floor joists. The roof is your basic 'weathered wood' shingles on top of a felt underlayment, although a tin roof could just as easily be installed. This was my first attempt at building a shed from a plan. My previous coop was built about 8 years ago using spare lumber and the proverbial bailing wire and spit. The new coop should be good for 20 to 30 years--which means it will probably outlive me. ;-) I love the look of red outbuildings on a farm so I went with Valspar Barn and Outbuilding Red paint. After two stray dogs clobbered my flock about three weeks ago I now have 35 chicks that call the coop home. I hope you enjoy looking at these pictures.
