Here you can see our watering system. Fill it outside, it runs inside then back out. There are 6 drippers inside and 6 outside. We even made a lower section for the bantams. We put a removable cap at the lowest point so we can clean it out. The whole system hold about 8 gallons.

It took three bags of pine shavings to cover the floor about 3" deep. As I mentioned, we are switching to sand by this spring. I can see already there will be eggs buried in this stuff.

We've learned so much from this site and have taken some of the ideas we liked best and incorporated them into our coop. Here you can see a few of them; holes between each box and curtains on the top row. Yes I said curtains. Made from some old blue jeans, they will offer our hens both privacy and a stylish box that says "Yes, yes they are skinny jeans".

Here you can see the anchor in action. The bottom door has chains on it so we can set the egg basket on it. Still need to build a platform under it to make it easier for some of the shorter egg collectors to reach the top row, lol.

First night in the new coop! We waited until they were roosting for almost an hour in the old coop before we moved them over one at a time. Overall went really smooth. Now they are in lock down for a few days so they get all nested in so to speak.

Recycled a vinyl billboard to cover the wood floor. Should work better than paint and its free! For now we are covering it with pine shavings but the plan is to switch to sand by this spring.

A friend just built a 3,500sq ft house and had a bunch of fiber cement siding left over. Doing a little trading, I am going to frame in a room for him in his garage and the siding is all mine!

Ripped 2'x4's in half makes really cheap trim boards. I bought them new since I was about out of straight boards by now. They were primed and painted before installing them.

The rest of the rafters are on, as is the metal roof. Inside all the nailers for the trim and siding are also in place. I had just enough scrap plywood to sheet the back wall. Now making good use of an old vinyl billboard before we put up the siding. That will work as insulation and help keep any draft out. You can see where I extended the roof in the back corner. That will keep some of the rain out of the chicken door.

I wrapped more straps around the door header and 2'x4's that were resting on it. This would help keep it from sliding while I worked it into place. After bracing everywhere I thought might push, pull or bend, I put two wide straps around the end sticking up and wrapped them around the doubled up section of the ceiling joists. I tightened it up a few clicks then went and lifted and blocked up the end closest to the ground. I repeated this process until it fell into place. Whew!!! It might have been easier to build it in place.

Now the roof. Given that I am building this by myself I thought it might be easier to build the roof/storage section on the ground and then raise it up later. I built the 2'x4 ceiling and rim joists then the center section. I did not attach them together as I figured it would be easier to put them up separately as well.

Yeah! Four walls are up. The front wall will have double doors for easy access to clean the floor. The wall on the left will have a window and 10 nesting boxes. The food and water systems will mount on the back wall.

Here we have the 4'x6 pressure treated beams and PT 2x6's for the ends. I buried it in the ground to get it level as well as help keep critters from getting under it.

Loony Bin

This is our second coop here on The Ozark Funny Farm. It's 10' wide x 15' long and is made almost entirely from reclaimed materials. I did barter some labor for the siding and I will say that it took 3 times as long to build. It sure wasn't pretty looking at big piles of scrap lumber and metal roofing for almost a year, nor was it much fun removing hundreds of nails and screws, turning 2'x6's into 2x4's and piecing smaller boards together to make something long enough to use but we think it was well worth it. By the time it's completed we will have spent less than $400 on it! We've seen buildings about this size go for over $10 thousand! Anyway, we checked out post after post and picture after picture on this site and watched hours of YouTube videos for ideas and tips before starting and incorporated some that we really liked, as well as a few of our own. We sure hope you like what we have made and maybe, just maybe find a little inspiration in our journey.
