It's called masonry sand, fine except some larger gravel, but not as coarse as construction sand. I get it for around $40 per yard. I haul it from the gravel yard. The sand is over clay soil in the runs, and over vinyl flooring in the coops. I got sick of the shavings, also. I'm so happy with the sand, so easy to clean the coops and keep the pen scooped.
