Black Sumatra

I love my Sumatra chickens they are smart and fun and full of personality. Looks like you have several cockerels. Our first chickens were all Sumatra 4 hens one rooster, we chose the gender when we purchased the chicks. Our rooster was a good guy and took good care of our hens. We only had one time he attacked me and actually I think it was because I had a new pair of muck boots and he was not familiar with them. I gave him heck and he never did it again, (smart I think) He hated my wheel barrow though and he would attack it whenever he saw it. It was actually quite funny to see. Not sure if it looked like a strange chicken to him or he was venting his frustrations.LOL He got injured some how and we never did find out how, but ended up dying. At that time we had a broody cochin bantam hen that sat some Sumatra eggs and raised them so we got one more rooster and a hen. I am down to one old hen and one younger hen from my original bunch. I plan to get more Sumatras at some point I think. I even had one get broody so that was kinda fun she was not the greatest at staying on task so my other hen that always got broody sat the eggs with her and when the Sumatra girl would get lazy the other hen just kept up the work. When they hatched the eggs they each took a chick to raise, funny thing was she would forget about the chick sometimes and then the other hen would just take over. It worked out because the chicks both grew up happy and healthy.

If you have not had the before I want to tell you that you will enjoy them.

That is awesome! This is my first time raising sumatras, I love the feathers, and color. I hope to show them at my local fair. I ordered 8 eggs from a farm in Washington and with zero incubating experience i managed to get 3 to hatch! it was fun but stressful too. I am looking to get a pullet because i wish to breed them.
