Step 4: Construct and install heat lamp stand

This ended up being the most simple design... there is no base. The two posts slide through a hole in the chicken wire. This allows me to remove the stand when I want to open the doors/clean the brooder. The bar across the top has a hole drilled into the edge. It isn't perfectly round or straight so I can adjust the height easily by moving the cord and sliding it into the groove.

Step 3: Using leftover lumber from my puppy-gate construction projects and chicken wire, I build the door frames/cover for the brooder.

I found a bird ladder at a local pet store and thought it might be useful for the chicks to start roosting. It is removable for easy cleaning.

Step 2: Line the bottom with plastic

The dresser is quite flimsy and would not stand up to moisture. I lined the bottom and 1-2" up the sides with several layers of plastic.
