The coop is 35" from the ground, and the hens fly right up into it from their enclosed yard area. Their "official" access to the coop is via a roost and ramp in a fully enclosed run, that lead to a small chicken door in the coop.

Five new chicks! They were incubated in the Kindergarten classroom, and needed a home at the end of the school year in early June 2015.

Deedee's Inn today, Nov 2 2015, after a year and a half of fun construction! The five 3-mo-old chickens (four pullets and one accidental cockerel) sleep in the 2x4 coop on the left, and the four older hens sleep in the bigger 4x4 coop on the right. They share 80 sq. ft of enclosed run space plus a fenced-in chicken yard. I am curious to see if the younger ones will eventually try to move into the bigger coop with the older ones!

The latest improvement: a paved courtyard. Here you see the big 4x4 coop on the right, where the four adult hens sleep, and the smaller 2x4 coop, where the four pullets and cockerel sleep.

early 2015. The four hens are laying at least two dozen eggs a week, they have their 4x4 coop, their 48 sq ft of enclosed runs, and their chicken yard.

The roosts are 2.5 inches wide, have rounded edges, and are covered with inner tubes from mountain bike tires. I got the inner tubes for free from a bike shop, when I asked them for punctured inner tubes destined for the trash. I read that this width and shape of roost is best for chicken feet. They spend so much time on them, that I decided they should be right.
