This is Big Mama(my girls named her that) she is a barred rock we got from local feed store and is 7 wks old and has been mothering the 10 various breed day old chicks we got since she was 5 wks old. She took a couple days to get used to them, but now she sits on them at night to keep em warm and when they are scared they all huddle around her legs. I'm a first time chicken owner so I don't know if this behavior is normal for a 5 week old chick to mother the younger ones but it works for us. They have been able to be moved outside and they are only 2 wks old and they free range our backyard all day with her. She teaches them things using different sounds and it's the most interesting thing to watch. I'm addicted!!!

This is 7 wk old Barred rock we got from local feed store the girls named Big Mama and she is sitting on 10 2 wk old various breed chicks (4 Barred rock, 2 silkies, 2 silver laced cochins, 2 buff orpingtons).
