We get a bag of cast-off produce from our local veggie guy every Friday and I glean out what is salvageable and what the girls love best--corn on the cob, leaf lettuce, apples, oranges, and--their absolute favorite--melons! Also, my dear husband hung a chain inside the coop so we can hang their feeder when the weather isn't good. Always remember to keep your feed very dry so it doesn't mold. :)

Here is the stand alone nesting box that dear husband built. Lesson learned: We do not use straw. We have found that Timothy (or orchard) grass works better and we can throw it right in the compost when the time comes to change it. It makes the inside of the coop smell wonderful and the girls love it--maybe it's a little softer on their hard working behinds! :) I was afraid the "shelf" in the front of the boxes might have been too wide and the girls would use it to roost, but it hasn't been a problem. Underneath you can see the glass canister with the girls "treats" in it. Our feed guru, Rich, mixed it up for me with sea kelp, meal-worms, organic oats and grains, and other great stuff (not entirely sure what else but I don't ask cuz Rich is a Godsend and to me he is the "chicken whisperer!")

Here is the roost where the girls sleep at night. Dear husband attached it to the inside wall so it was secure. As you can see the roost hasn't been well used yet, but give it another 2-3 months and it will look pretty "weathered!"

We are constantly entertained by our girls and night-time is no exception. It's ALWAYS the same order: Little Red, Barbi, Pepper, Jezebel (facing in the opposite direction), and Ruthie on the top row and right below are the 2 Orpingtons--Honey and Buffy. Every.single.night. :) Too funny!

Here is another shot of the coop so you can see where the roost is. We let them out at daybreak every morning and make sure they have plenty of water and good stuff to eat.
