Great article! Just what I was looking for. I've been having problems with my eggs being viable until the end then only getting 1/2 live chicks. The repeated words "wait, wait, wait" definitely hit home with me so I will be more patient for them to do it themselves. Also, I was taking my chicks...

Mareks? Vitamin deficiency? 10 week old cockerel cannot stand or walk

I'm sad that you don't have any replies yet because I'm having the same type of problem with some of my babies this year. We've had to euthanize 5 chicks so far. I hate to think I might have to get rid of all my chickens to keep it from spreading. It doesn't seem to start at a specific age. At...

Please Help--How to store fertilized eggs before incubating??

I plan on getting a 24 or 40 egg incubator soon. I have a small flock and free range so I don't get a lot of eggs each day {4-6}. My question is --- How do you, and how long can you, store eggs before placing them in the incubator??

I was wondering how long she would continue to sit on the empty nest. Now I know! She's been there over a week now. I've been feeling guilty for taking them tho' so I'm...

I have 4 hens and one rooster who during the day are free range. They go back into the coop at night after which we close the doors for the night. 2 of my hens are now in the process of hatching a total of 15 eggs. At last check 6 of them had fully hatched with one being 1/2 out of shell. {very...

    Yah! Bug eaters!

I was thinking the same thing this week. My coop is right by the horse pasture so maybe this year the bugs won't be so bad for them

What to do when they hatch??? :(

I have 2 hens that are setting on a total of 15 eggs. What do I do when they start hatching??? Leave them with mom?? Take them and put them in a separate, safer area?? Right now the other chickens {2 more hens and a rooster} have access to where the they are setting. ANY suggestions would be...
