Thanks for all of the suggestions. The one thing I have not really thought about is the feed situation since the older ones are on layer feed and the newer ones are on grower feed still.
The other option I have been thinking about is just getting rid of the older ones since they didn't lay...
Thanks for the replies. The reason I want to combine the two groups is because the coop that the younger ones are in is really too small for them now. I only use this coop to raise the baby chicks in or to separate a chicken if I have to.
The older rooster is bigger than both of the younger...
I have a Rooster and eight hens that are adults. I have two roosters and eight hens that were born 10/9/13 that are housed in a separate smaller coop. I bought these as nine day old chicks from a hatchery. They were all supposed to be pullets but you know how that goes. The new chickens are...
Our cats have been know to get in the nest boxes to have their kittens. The cat in the nest box by herself had a kitten there last night but my fiancée moved them both to a dog carrier. The cat let the kitten die and is back in the nest box. I think the cat in with the hen is also pregnant...
How are you keeping the water in the cups from freezing during the winter. I made a waterer out of a five gallon bucket with the watering cups mounted in the bottom with a bucket heater in the bucket and while the water in the bucket didn't freeze, the water in the cups did freeze and basically...
I made a waterer last year with a five gallon bucket and the watering cups right before winter and had a bucket heater and the water in the cups would freeze and prevent their use. The water in the bucket would still be unfrozen. Needless to say, I went back to the heated dog bowl.
I tried...
My coop is an 8x4 not counting the run and I have 10 chickens in there and have had up to 15 with no problems. In the winter even if they don't go outside, not all of the chickens stay down on the floor. Quite a few stay up on the roosts and is why I don't have a problem.

Here is what the inside of my 4x8 coop looks like. I did add another roosting bar near the top of the side walls.

Here is my elevated coop. It has a wood floor and I use chips on top of it. Coop is 8x4 and it doesn't take long to clean it out.

I have 10 chickens and a 50lb bag will last me about a month and I keep their two metal feeders that hold 10lbs each full all of the time so something else is going on at your house.

Here is a picture of mine elevated off of the ground. It's about 14" off of the ground.
I like it for many reasons. It adds more space in the run for the chickens to be. It keeps predators and other animals from living under the coop. A place to go for the chickens to get out of the...
You will like their coops. I have one that they built me a little over two years ago. If you go to their website under the "other Creations" tab, my coop is in the far left column of coops, the second one down from the top. It's the one with the blue roof, sitting on a trailer with the light...
One of my RIR hens has a huge abdomen which cause her to wattle when she walks. It feels fairly firm when you feel it. She also breaths kind of fast. She has been like this for months. What could this be.? She acts pretty normal otherwise but does sit down a lot. Thanks for any ideas.
