To prepare for winter we have our coop fully insulated and we have extra cracked corn to keep up their body heat up.

Here are our two new baby girls, barred rocks! When they get older we will introduce them to our 6 red star hens. Hopefully everyone will get along! ;)

I live in Iowa, and my local police officer said if any animal attacks your livestock(aka chickens) you can kill them, and I live within city limits and I can still shoot them! I would assume that means snakes too! Does anyone think hardware cloth around the bottom of a chicken run fence would...

How old are they?

I am thinking about buying 6 lavender Orpington hens. They said they were hatched late last summer and haven't started laying yet. Does that sound right? When do most lavenders start laying? It seems late to me. We just want them as family chickens, but we want healthy hens that will lay.

Ps. We are starting with about 10 month old hens(Rhode Island Reds), any advice other than the obvious stuff?

The stipulations where, no roosters which we have no problems with( we just want hens for eggs). We can only have up to 12 chickens, if we want more we have to go back and ask. I am just asking special permission, so my city council will vote on it at the end of meeting so I will get the result. I know other people in our area(close by but different town) and his city council has allowed it. So wish me luck! :)
