Ok, it is the first time their crop has shown. They have had access to plenty of food and fresh water day and night since being taken from the bator, but this is the first day I let them outside to explore. I heard that there can be problems sometimes with the crop. What do I look for to know...
I was hoping that was what it was. What should I look for that could potentially become a concern? So it is ok for them not to have their food at night? I thought they were supposed to have access to it all the time. Just water is ok then through the night? They are 10 and 7 days old.
Both my chicks have a large mass below their throats. Is this dangerous or normal? It is soft, but firm (not hard and rigid) about .5-1 in in diameter. Should I remove the sawdust from the brooder and replace it with newspaper? I am worried they are eating the sawdust.
I have a 6 day old Polish chick and a 9 day old Silkie. We hatched the Polish and when the other eggs didn't make it, we got the Silkie from a local farm so that it wouldn't be alone. We handle our chicks a lot, but most of that time, they are just resting in our lap or on a towel/clean rag up...
Oh my word, that is mild compared to my Polish chick! He/she is actually quite aggresive. It is only 6 days old and so small still and yet it likes to chase the dog and our feet and peck at us. LOVES going after spiders and oh yeah, when left in the brooder without attention will chirp...
I would if I knew what to look for, but being that I am totally unknowledgeable and inexperienced to know what I would be looking at and what looked right or wrong, it would feel wrong and unnecessary.
After I knew he was dead for sure, I took him out of the bator. You can tell there is something very wrong with his organs. It is all dark and goey inside and there is a big lump that looks like it is filled with liquid (cyst?) just under his ribcage. There is no way he would have made it...
NEvermind, he is dead! He stopped breathing and is completely limp now. He was alive 10 minutes ago!!! I just don't get it! Should I have helped him out? Did I leave him trying to hatch too long? Now I have to try and tell my daughter in the morning:( She is going to be crushed!

This chick is very much alive, just exhausted after a 25 hr hatch from pip to exit of it's shell. I did not assist the hatch and there was no shrink wrapping going on. It has a yellow ball shaped thing sticking out of it's belly which is attatched to a bloody membrane(?). I am assuming this...
