Hi, Melissa,
My name is Meg and I am also a backyard chicken keeper in East Nashville. I'm on Maxwell Ave near The Pharmacy. Where are you? I've got 3 right now (we just retired two of our older girls this morning!) I've had chickens for 4 years. I'm working on getting 3 new pullets to...
It worked! So haters and doubters be ******. All three were pullets. Sadly, two got eaten by a predator (beheaded!) but the remaining one is great. Spunky and lots of personality. And definitely a lady.
Just throwing this out there, even though this thread is pretty old
I just went to a local hatchery and the woman there picked from sight what she thought were girls, then she held them on their backs. The ones that just laid there calmly, she said were pullets. The roos kicked and squirmed...

I just went to a hatchery outside the city and the woman there showed me a trick. She picked from sight what she thought were girls, then she held them on their backs. The ones that just laid there calmly, she said were pullets. The roos kicked and squirmed...
When you use the heated water bowls, do you just fill them or do you put some kind of other contraption in to hold more water? My worry is that the water will get really dirty and they don't have a huge capacity. I would love any suggestions!
We bought this from our local farmer's coop and it is not getting used again. It was better than frozen water, but not by much. We had to change clothes for work many mornings when the base popped off while carrying it and spilled water all over us. It is hard to fill, and very hard to flip...
We got 3 Black Copper Marans a year ago for our backyard flock, and they are not our favorites. We much prefer our Buff Orpingtons. The Marans are not very friendly, are very hard to catch, don't like to be held and general shy away from humans. They tend to be a bit squawky.
One of our...
We have had 3 Buff Orpingtons for a year now and love them. We live in Nashville and have them in our fenced in backyard. We have a two toddler who loves them. They let him pick them up, and are very sweet and docile while being held. They are good layers--in the summer we get 3-4 eggs every...
Mine are doing the same thing. One of my girls will lay in the nest and the other to layers won't. My big worry is when one goes broody, I may have to move her to the nesting box to keep her from getting pooped on at night. Anyone had problems with that?
We're having the same problem. I moved the nesting boxes to the spot they liked and they just found another spot. I might keep trying, but maybe it's okay that they're laying in the corners. My worry is what happens when they go broody and are sitting right beneath the roosting bar! Won't...
Mine Buff Orpingtons lay on a 27 hour cycle, so the first day they lay a breakfast egg, second day a lunch egg, third day a dinner egg. On the fourth day they rest and don't lay.
I have a small flock of 6 birds in a tractor coop. They range in our yard during the day. In the hen house there were nesting boxes.
The first hen started laying but instead of the nesting area, she just laid in a corner hunkered down in the pine shavings in the hen house.
I made new nesting...
Thanks for the input! Last night they all roosted on it quite happily, so for now I will leave it. I can always move it if it starts to be a problem--I might add another roosting bar a bit lower and about 12 inches away.
