    One hen always escapes!

I have a 24 week blue andalusian hen who is a roamer at heart. She is smaller and lighter than the rest of my flock, and so finds ways to jump to the highest point within our yard and then over the fence into our neighbor's yard. She must come back for food and water, but otherwise stays out of...

    software for managing egg inventory/sales/customers?

I have a small flock (13 hens), generate about 7 dozen eggs in the high season, and sell the eggs to people in the neighborhood, referrals, colleagues at work, etc. I have about 20 active customers, and it gets cumborsome to keep track of orders, inventory, and revenue. I have developed a...

Figuring the square-footage of a coop

Thanks everyone! This is great input. I'll make sure they have enough covered area in the yard for when it's rainy out, and enough roosting area in the coop to be comfortable. And Mchl, I know what you mean about the ever-expanding flock... they are an addiction!

Figuring the square-footage of a coop

Hi all- I've raised chickens for a couple of years now, and my flock keeps expanding, to the point where I now have 17 hens -- and they need a new coop! Their current coop is too small, with 5 nesting boxes and two roosts, and we would like to expand to fit everyone more comfortably. We'd like...

Where to find unlabeled egg cartons

Hello- I live in the California Bay Area and am trying to find a source for the kind of unlabeled egg cartons that can be spit into 6-packs, like these: http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Egg … s-p21.aspx. My flock of 13 chickens are finally laying eggs too quickly for me to scrounge used egg...

    6-pack Egg Cartons

Hello- I live in the Bay Area and would like to buy 25-50 blank egg cartons that can be spit into 6-packs, like these: http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Egg-Cartons/Pulp-Egg-Cartons-2x6-eggs-p21.aspx I'd prefer to buy locally and pick up this weekend. I want to avoid the high shipping costs...

Clues that your hens will start laying soon.

I'm so glad for this posting, because I think my free-range chickens are getting close to laying soon, too, and I've been wondering what the signs are. Then, this morning, I heard my 17-week old Partridge Plymouth Rock making a lot of noise. That's rare. I went outside to check on them, and...

    Ideal chicks ship today!!

I ordered from Ideal 3 weeks ago and received my seven girls, all very healthy. I also recieved 8 males ("packing peanuts" which I had asked not to receive) but happily found a home for them. Otherwise my experience with Ideal was great. You won't believe how fast they grow!

A humane way to handle male chicks?

Great news, everyone - I found a nice woman on a farm who will take them! She's got her own day-old flock and will add my boys to it. they'll have a good old time with new friends. Thanks again to everyone who gave advice and support. Feelin' good! Sarah

A humane way to handle male chicks?

Thank you all so much for your great suggestions and compassion. I'm going to call around to rural feed stores and also see if I can find any interest on craigslist. I hope to find a home for them as pets. PKeeler, I really appreciate your perspective on the alternatives (particularly 1 and...

A humane way to handle male chicks?

I am new to raising chickens and to BYC, though I've been studying up on both for months. I just received my shipment of 7 day-old pullets from Ideal Poultry, and though I specifically and repeatedly requested "no males for warmth", I ended up with EIGHT male chicks. Thankfully, all 15 chicks...
