In our run we use kennel panels as fencing. It is 6' high and the younger birds can fly out easily. Since we have predators and since I also have an automatic door on the coup, I don't like the idea of totally enclosing the run area.
My concern is that a raccoon for instance could get into the...
Quick update...
The now pullets are now at 17 weeks of age, and have been moved in with the prior flock of 4 hens. I will put together a last set of pictures at this age and post that, possibly along with a group shot. :-)
Of the initial 16 chicks I have 11 pullets to add to my flock. With...
Thanks all for the kind comments. I found another site providing chick growth history. This one is setup as a blog, with a day-by-day progression photographed in a much more artistic manner, including the use of a tiny studio. :)
Week six of my record goes up tomorrow.
When I raised our first backyard flock I searched the internet for a pictorial history of chick growth. I recall that I was able to find only one and the pictures were of poor quality. We are starting our replacement flock this year and now I can't find any.
So, I decided to record...
Well its been considerably longer than a few weeks. I have however been able to update the description, pictures etc of the working water heater design, using chicken nipples.
Here's the description.
Although I solved the freezing water problem I still have a few side issues to correct. One...
OK, so another update...
I received the chicken "nipples" last week, and have since rebuilt the plenum to work with them. Since these need to be installed on the bottom side of the plenum, I needed to rebuild the plenum. I have also reconstructed the housing so that it is now shorter in height...
You may be right. I reviewed them again. I'll order some and give them a try. If they work it will be far easier to correct any spillage problems and so much simpler to implement.
Thanks!
I have another update to share. This past few days the temps have been below freezing, with wind chills putting the temps at around -11F in the overnight hours. I went out to check on how the heater was doing and both drinkers were frozen. So I cannot declare success yet.
Obviously, although...
Hello All,
I have an update on the performance of this water heating system.
During this past week the outside temps have fluctuated around the 20-degree point, with the same temps being experienced inside the coup at those times when the auto chicken door is open. The water froze in the cups...
Hello all,
I recently completed a new solution to freezing water. My implementation is different to most . Since the coup is 100+ feet from the nears water source I use a 40-gallon tank to feed automatic waterers both inside of our coup and out in the run. The run waterers are turned off in the...
I've been pretty successful at reducing flies by using diatomaceous earth (DE). I know this substance has been discussed elsewhere on these forums, but in case you're running across this for the first time...
- It is made up of prehistoric, tiny diatom shells that have sharp edges
- It is mined...

Hi Marc,
I live in southern NH so we're a bit colder up here. I bought and installed this auto door opener and have been very pleased with it. You can read about my particular installation here.
I had the same concerns, so I made sure that the door is well-protected from the elements...
That's a large run! Good on you.
I use kennel panels. I originally bought a 10x10 kennel made of painted welded steel fence. It is very strong - strong enough for me to build a wooden roof that sits on top of it; at least it does now, but I'll have to provide supports before the winter snows...
We use sand. Had a truck load brought in when building out the run. The area is large enough that the chickens can do their thing, while time and the elements do the cleanup. I'm lazy about the operational aspects. Much prefer the designing.
Being a New Englander, I went for utility...
Doors flip up to gather eggs from the working area of the coup, so we don't have to enter the living area.
A longer door at the bottom opens to allow for easier cleaning.
Here's what it looks like all buttoned up.
Here's what it looks like...
