Los Angeles, CA * 3 lovely hens & an amazing house-all 1 year old *

The girls are all 1 year old, great layers and very sweet: Billina - a gorgeous and super friendly Buff Orpington Henny Penny - an Easter Egger with a very funny and quirky personality Emily - a Silver Laced Wyandotte who hardly seems to ever miss a day laying eggs that are very nearly round...

No. Hollywood, CA * 3 lovely hens & an amazing house-all 1 year old *

I've decided to give the girls to a good home and sell the hen house that my son and I built from scratch. The girls are all 1 year old, great layers and very sweet: Billina - a gorgeous and super friendly Buff Orpington Henny Penny - an Easter Egger with a very funny and quirky personality...

    Do dogs kill like this?

Just for the record, my cats leave the cleanest entrails I ever saw when they get a rat or a mouse - it looks like something from Gray's Anatomy. I'm not suggesting a cat, and I agree dogs are much too clumsy, but some other animal perhaps? And what human would stop to gut and clean chickens...

    Possum in the chicken feeder

Okay, thanks. And now I realize that I've only ever seen possum at night and the girls are locked up tight then.

    Possum in the chicken feeder

Will possum hurt the chickens or just eat the food?

    Sand Run

I have 1.7 chickens, of course! No, I have 3 (a buff orp, an americauna and a silver laced wyandotte) and I thought that I was giving them more space than most people seem to have. I've been thinking that if I have to cover the whole area with litter, that I should make it a bit smaller, but...

    Sand Run

I am just starting out and this sounds very interesting. I live in So Cal and my 6 week olds have been spending days in a temp pen that is just grass and dirt while I try to come up with a plan for good fencing and finish the hen house. I have been washing/watering the area every few days in...

    Chicks or Pullets?

Thanks SH! My real question was more when do they become pullets? Is it once they get their feathers? Someone said when they start to look like fat pigeons. If so, my 4 week olds are now pullets.

How much DE to add to feed?

I agree with the silly question - what is DE? And while we're at it, what is DH?

    Chicks or Pullets?

Hi, my girls are 4 weeks old and I've been giving them Universal Feed Chick Starter Mash. It says on it to give it until they are 6 weeks old. Fine, but what then??? Universal Feed does not have any web site that I could find. Is there a pullet feed? When exactly are they pullets? My three...

    feathering, kicking and other questions

Thank you so much for the reassurance on my buff orp! It's funny because she started out just a bit smaller than the other two and I worried about her getting picked on, but now she is bigger than they are, though not a bully. I had thought that I would regularly let them run around the yard...

    feathering, kicking and other questions

Hi, I am new! I have 3 chicks that are 2 1/2 weeks old. A Buff Orpington, an Americauna and a Silver Laced Wyandotte. The BO has patchy feathers that look a bit uncomfortable, but maybe I notice her more because she is the lightest in color. She also has a noticeable pinkish ridge already...
