my guess is the murry rir are not that pure(bought at local feed store who uses murry) dc are from ideal- hens were sepperate for two weeks before collecting eggs
i have 10 leghorns(different colors) roos included(2) it has been below 0 many times already and we have over a foot of snow and no frostbite in my coop. Chickens are the best heater/humidifier out there
is it better to buy pullet orders and avoid the roos(and let the hatcheries grind the day old cocks alive) I think not at least these roos lived a good life
I live in montana and do not use heat lamps for my ducks. they are in a old fiberglass topper that is cover with staw and tarps. My chickens are in a insulated coop w/ light(cfls) for light only but i do have about 70 chickens in a 16x10 coop. how big is yours?
I try to put mine in the coop when the are close to the same size. Put the in at night when it is dark and do not provide any light for them. They seem to have less stress this way but you will still see the fighting the next or so. Just monitor them and watch for any birds that might have...
