We let ours out to free range some, too, but they are easy to wrangle and get back into the run. The other day all I had to do was walk outside and they came running. Followed me, and a couple led the way, back to the coop and run. They won't come if they are in the middle of a dust bath under...
I had someone tell me that I need to put metal sheeting or something like that on the bottom of my coop to prevent animals from gnawing through the wood to get to the chickens.
My coop is a converted tractor shed. We are putting in a floor about a foot to 16 inches off the ground, to give us...
Does not seem stressed or in pain. She was the best early growing chick, and has the best, longest feathers. Except for her tush.
She only seems to get pecked a little if I put ointment of some kind on her, and then only a little.
She pecks at her own bottom occasionally, if I put ointment...
This is great! My dad is a collector of stuff, and he had lots of wood in his garage that he gave us, plus a big piece of rubber roofing, too. We can get some pallets, but they are proving harder to get than we thought. We'll still have quite a bit to buy though. And the hardware cloth is going...
My RSL chicks are 3 1/2 weeks old. All 6 still alive and doing well apparently. I have one who has a butt problem, but we are working on it.
This same chick has some weird toes. I'm thinking one was broken before we got her. It doesn't spread out like a normal chicken foot, but stays right...
No way those are a month old. Maybe TSC misspoke and they were two days old. Mine are 3 1/2 weeks and are much larger and more feathered than that. Those look like they are about 2 weeks now.
UPDATE:
She is still pooping out the sides. I tried, and continue to apply the hemorrhoid ointment. Hope it won't kill her if she eats it. She does peck it a bit after I put it on. Today I soaked her behind to get the dried poop off, then put some vaseline on a q-tip and gently inserted into...
Oh I love the red and white! It looks great!
I keep seeing all these cool coops and think, I want one like that. And yours looks awesome! We haven't started construction, and won't for a couple weeks, since my dad is bringing all the wood for it. He is a scavenger and finds or has virtually...
"Can you get hemorrhoid cream for the chicken's butt?"
"I gave the chick a butt soak today."
"I need a q-tip for the chicken's butt."
We are having issues, but I never dreamed, in a million years, I would be wiping a chick's butt. (Vent, I know.)
A 3' x 3' coop only gives you 9 sq ft of space. That is good for two chickens, not six. You would need 24 sq ft of floor space, so at least 4' x 6'. And wouldn't head space be while they are roosting? The roosts need to be up off the floor of your coop, then 12"-18" inches above that.
Would you find the "frozen, frosted mess" because of the moisture four birds would create in a small space? Just curious. We are building a coop that is 4' x 8', and 4-51/2' tall. With only six birds, we should have plenty of space, more than the recommended 4 sq ft each. But we are still in the...
Thanks for these ideas! I want to name ours, and we can only identify two on looks right now. One has no feathers on her butt and a deformed toe (Nala), the other is currently the smallest and darkest (Bacon).
I'm curious what you are going to use to cover the hoop part? Building material is usually rigid-plywood, siding, pallets. Nice and big though. Neat door!
