Comment by 'chickenchacha' in article 'Composting With Chickens'

Good post Scott Cooper. Let us know what happens with your winter lodgings. I'm moving from the West coast to the East coast next January and will have a lot to learn about raising chickens in a winter climate! There will be pros and cons like serious grass growth v dry dry dry. It will be an...

    Who uses their chicken compost?

Leaves... A tree's naturally shredded material. Go for it.

    The Chicken Plucker?

Thank you ScottnLydia! I really get the "absolutely need company" part! I plan to get some sheep as well and hope there will be some protection for free ranging chickens too by having a llama on board. So many predators to take into consideration..... I'm wondering how much additional feed will...

    Hubby shows lil' enthusiasm

Your wife is "chicken" no wonder you married her! Opposites attract.....

    Who uses their chicken compost?

You'd better get some "poop" shoes to stroll around in :)

    Will this work?

Main thing is to lock them up tight at night even if they're close to the house... "everything loves chicken" is our motto.

    Who uses their chicken compost?

Yes, I would try that. Think of the chickens as little composter machines. If there are bugs and worms there, they will be hunting for them and turning over the materials. Sounds as if you have ALL the ingredients you need! Funny, I actually use rabbit pellets for cat litter. I'm not sure if I...

    Colorado

Hi all, I probably did it horribly wrong and won't try this again. Just wanted to let readers know..... I'm very distressed about it right now. Dry ice method didn't work (for me) for putting down my injured rooster...... and had to resort to another way. I won't describe the details but warn...

Would love suggestions on dual purpose birds ... Or meat birds!

I love the Silkies - there's generally always one broody hen, nice smallish eggs, really cute and can't say enough good things about them.

Hi from California but moving to Connecticut (??)

Thanks Diane! I'm certainly looking forward to it (not the move part). We have most of the critters here in the Cal country minus the fishercats. Mountain lions are often seen too. Hawks can be a nuisance too and now rabbits have moved in since the foxes haven't been seen for a couple of years...

    Hubby shows lil' enthusiasm

I was raised in the city... raised two kids in the country... they haven't lifted a "country" finger since! ---- BUT now their spouses love the "country" thing, so I watch and smile :).

    The Chicken Plucker?

Hi, very interesting and informative. Do Llamas get a bit lonely without company of their own kind? I used to have goats and they're so much happier when they have other goats for company. I have much to learn about Llamas...

Hi from California but moving to Connecticut (??)

I'm new here and have been a chickener forever (most favorite are the Silkies) but will be moving to Connecticut at the end of the year. I'm sure I have a few surprises in store for me but not having enough water won't be one of them :). I'm looking forward to building a whole new...
