    Chicken Pecking

I have 6 chickens. Ages vary from 1 to 4yrs. They are pecking both their own and each others feathers out. I am concerned about the start of cannabilism. One of the 1yr olds, Pheobe, has no neck or shoulder feathers, in spite of using Pick No More and the other one is losing hers, plus one of...

Chicken Treats -feeding oatmeal to chickens

Just read article on chicken treats which included hot oatmeal. In winter, I used to make it every morning for my feathered family along with Kefir, which I make and give them everyday. However, I read an article, posted in one of your forums, which stated that hot oatmeal is too glutenous for...

    Flock not integrating

Thank you for your encouraging replies. Actually, they seem to be settling down a little. Re roosters - 2 were culled early. Two stayed and then went to a good home. I kept them because they were so beautiful, hoping to rehabilitate them. From research, it seems that possibly Sidney, was a cross...

    Flock not integrating

Thank you for your replies. Very encouraging. I forgot to mention that the only one laying is my Speckled Sussex. The array of feathers has disappeared, so I don't think they were molting just yet, but still some evidence of pecking. I kept two of the roosters who were beautiful birds. They went...

    Flock not integrating

Present flock - one Sussex, three Easter Eggers. I raised 6 straight runs Americaunas, because they are supposed to be friendly and ended up with two hens. Two roosters were disposed of at an early age and two went to a good home. I integrated the babies at 10 weeks, by keeping them separated in...

    Barebacked chicken and Winter

Thanks for your reply, However, this morning I found a green egg in the cage of the one that came along for the ride. I suspected the EES may have been bred from her because she has ear muffs too. I'll have rethink this one. Pinless peepers may be the way to go, espcialy in the coop at night...

    Barebacked chicken and Winter

Thank you. Mixing the two seems like a good all year regime. I have added a 20% protein feed to their diet but maybe not enough. I like your idea.

    Barebacked chicken and Winter

Thanks. I'll follow up on your info. I have been trying to figure out how to separate her and still keep her dry when it rains. It's the extra one that came along for the ride, not my Easteregger, that I'm thinking of eliminating from the flock.

    Barebacked chicken and Winter

In July I introduced three Eastereggers to our flock, plus an older hen no longer laying to give her a home. The three Eastereggers had been ravaged by a rooster and were in really bad shape. I successfully managed to help the regrowth of feathers on two of them by adding extra protein to their...
